You may wonder what the most common pests are in North Carolina. It is home to a variety of insects and rodents, many of which can cause havoc in your home and bring sickness to your family. They are often attracted to food and water, so it’s important to keep areas clean and to prevent them from finding ways to get inside.

The experts at Eco Advantage are here to explain some of the most common North Carolina pests.

IDENTIFYING PESTS

Ants/Fire Ants: Ants commonly build their homes in covered areas outdoors such as woodpiles and trees. When they find your home, it is because they are looking for food sources or shelter. Fire ants are more aggressive and will bite or sting those that disturb them or their home. These bites can cause itching, swelling, or allergic reactions which may require medical attention.

Ticks: These bugs will attach themselves to any person or pet who has spent time outdoors, especially in areas in the woods. It is very important to wear a good bug repellant, long sleeves, and pants, and check yourself and your kids after spending time in wildlife.

Roaches: Roaches are probably the most common insect thought of when you hear the word pest. They like to hide in warm, dark, and damp places and go out to explore at night. If you notice small brown or black spots in dark corners of your cabinets similar to spilled pepper or coffee grinds, you may have roaches in your home. It is imperative that you clean up messes and fix any leaks to help prevent them from moving into your kitchen.

Termites: Termites are most known for their insatiable appetite; they will keep eating until they are terminated. It’s important to catch them early on to avoid as much damage as possible. Termites also love water – so it is important to keep your air conditioning units clean and dry. If you find wood that is hollow, damaged, or puckering, get it checked out to make sure there are no termites.

Mice and other rodents: Mice and rats breed year-round and can carry many variants of diseases. They chew through food products and packaging and leave droppings. It is important to clean up droppings as soon as possible so that no one becomes sick. It is also important to make sure all food is stored in airtight containers.
